In 1896, Laurence H. Rooney launched Manhattan Construction Company in what was then Oklahoma Territory through a New York Charter. It was only one year earlier that Rooney moved to Oklahoma from Iowa. He operated a general store in Chandler in Oklahoma Territory when his sideline construction business, now called Manhattan Construction Company, grew to such an extent that it became full-time.
