USAMRIID Project Breaks Ground

The Groundbreaking Ceremony for the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) project was held today at Fort Detrick, Maryland.  Manhattan Construction Co. and Torcon are building the project together in a joint venture. The USAMRIID project is valued at over $500 million.  The new USAMRIID will feature the latest in bio-containment technology to study dangerous organisms such as anthrax, the plague bacteria and the Ebola virus. Bio-Safety Level 4 (BSL-4) lab space, reserved for the most lethal organisms, will be a defining feature of the new facility.  BSL-4 labs have the most stringent safety and security requirements. Lieutenant General Eric Schoomaker was the keynote speaker at the event.
