Patterson Mansion DC Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation for Patterson Mansion Renovation

WASHINGTON DC – The DC Office of Planning Historic Preservation Office and DC Preservation League has recognized the Paterson Mansion, now Ampeer, with 2019 DC Award of Excellence for Historic Preservation Award. Located at Dupont Circle in Washington DC, the Ampeer was recently renovated by Manhattan Construction Company for building owners and joint developers, Rooney Properties and SB-Urban LLC. Hartman-Cox Architects provided design services.

The 112-year-old Patterson Mansion was previously owned by The Washington Club, one of the District’s oldest women’s social clubs since 1951. Manhattan Construction converted the historic Neoclassical-style mansion into micro apartments, designed by Hartman-Cox to optimize space and maximize the sense of openness. The existing four-story mansion structure and the new six-story addition include 92 rental studios, ranging from 250 to 530 square feet. The project includes a gym, library, dining room with large shared kitchen, bar and party area, outdoor terrace and hidden storage space, and numerous common areas for resident interaction.

The house was originally designed for entertaining. President Calvin Coolidge and his wife lived there in 1927 while the White House was being renovated, and Charles Lindbergh was a visitor in June of that year. The house remained in the Patterson family until 1948, when long-time resident Eleanor (Cissy) Patterson died and left the property to the American Red Cross. The Red Cross sold the house to the Washington Club three years later. The Patterson House was listed in the DC Inventory of Historic Sites in 1964 and the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

The award was presented at the 2019 Awards For Excellence in Historic Preservation ceremony Wednesday, May 8, 2019, at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, DC. The mission of the DC Preservation League is to preserve, protect, and enhance the historic and built environment of Washington, DC, through advocacy and education.
